What is Game Based Learning?

Gamification in education refers to the use of game mechanics to achieve learning outcomes. It stimulates the desire to learn and encourages learners to explore more within a gamified environment. The important thing is that gamified elements should not distract attention from the core subjects, but instead facilitate and enhance the learning process, increasing interest and engaging learners with educational content.

The history of games, including board games and other group-based interactions, dates back to ancient times. These physical types of games have influenced the development of online counterparts in the digital world. Our learning and development (L&D) specialists move with the times and have adopted game-based features in the e-learning domain, achieving captivating educational results. Let's delve into our extensive experience and the gamified services we can offer you.

Our Expertise

At Technomatix, we have wide-ranging experience in creating game-based elearning solutions. We have successfully collaborated with various clients, including industry leaders such as Metinvest (mining and manufacturing industry), Raiffeisen Bank Ukraine, Sense Bank, DTEK (energy sector), Infopulse (digital services), as well as non-profit organizations like ILO and LaStrada Ukraine.
From Iron Ores to Cast Iron
One of our notable projects was for our long-term partner, Metinvest, where we developed an educational game focused on the world of metal production. The game design incorporated an interactive map, animated locations, artifacts, and engaging tasks with corresponding rewards.

Participants were challenged to progress through each location, immersing themselves in the material presented and gaining valuable insights into the transformation process of iron ores into finished metal products. The acquisition of artifacts was carefully tied to the sequential mastery of the material, mirroring the phased production process.
The Sense of Engagement
We also developed an educational game for Sense Bank aimed at enhancing the engagement of employees across various ranks. Our solution involved the creation of a multi-story skyscraper, where participants would navigate different floors using a smart elevator.

The training itself revolved around practical cases, allowing students to practice their skills in providing assistance, supporting colleagues, maintaining a healthy work-life balance, and devoting themselves to their work effectively. Throughout the game, participants were rewarded for correctly completing these cases, and by accumulating specific awards, they had the opportunity to compete for the prestigious "Company Engagement Cup." This added an element of healthy competition and recognition, further motivating learners to actively participate and excel in the training program.
Take Off the Rose-Tinted Glasses

Our team tailored an innovative online quest in partnership with La Strada Ukraine, inspired by the mechanics of social networks, which enables learning through a mobile phone in a vertical format. The quest incorporates social media elements such as reels, stories, and characters, creating an immersive experience where learners feel as though they are observing the lives of these characters and learning from their examples.

The primary focus of this quest is to educate participants about the dynamics of violence and the behaviors of both perpetrators and victims. To achieve this, we have additionally incorporated mini-games such as crosswords, Jenga, and mazes.
Take Off the Rose-Tinted Glasses

As players progress through the quest, they should complete practical tasks at different locations. By doing so, they collect artifacts in the form of rose-tinted glasses, which symbolize helping the quest's characters to see through the illusions in their relationships. This reinforces the importance of critical thinking and recognizing warning signs in unhealthy relationships.

Gamification Learning Techniques We Apply

At Technomatix, we are dedicated to creating exceptional, tailor-made gamified projects for each client. When optimizing the game design strategy, we adhere to the golden rules including scaffolded learning for students, but we never employ a one-size-fits-all approach. We recognize that game-like elements should not be standardized and used universally. Instead, we meticulously differentiate and categorize these elements based on their intended purposes. Some game elements are designed to enhance motivation and recognize learners' achievements, while others focus on fostering student engagement and immersion.

Game Elements For Motivation and Achievements

Points

Learners have the opportunity to earn points while studying theoretical information or completing tasks within the gamified learning experience. They experience a sense of confidence in their knowledge when receive rewards for their successful results.

Badges

Badges are virtual awards that learners obtain either by accumulating a certain number of points or in the context of other achievement domains. These badges symbolize learners' excellence in specific learning topics and confirm their competences.

Leaderboards

Leaderboards are utilized in creating competition among learners within the same training course. They present a ranking table that indicates each participant's position. The element of competition and the internal challenge to outperform others fosters active involvement and enhances learning efficiency.

Rewards and punishments

It is important to note that rewards and badges are distinct assets within the gamification for learning context. Rewards can serve as additional incentives for successfully overcoming game obstacles that contribute to educational progress. Their opponents, punishments, play a pivotal role in simulating a realistic environment by forming correct behavioral patterns and understanding the consequences of incorrect actions.

Levels

Levels demonstrate participants' progress within the learning gamification process. Levels can be unlocked gradually based on the number of points scored or awards received. Each subsequent level may feature more complex logic or be accessible only to advanced employees, allowing room for professional growth while keeping opportunities open for learners.

Artifacts

Artifacts refer to game items that players must collect throughout the game. These artifacts are often associated with specific educational topics or contain additional information that sparks the interest of students.

Hidden objects

Hidden objects add an element of curiosity and allow participants to immerse themselves in the training quest. These objects may hold keys to puzzling events or solutions to challenging situations, seamlessly integrated into the storytelling process and motivating learners.

Avatars

An avatar represents the character through which the learner plays and with whom they identify. Avatars can be customized to reflect external appearance or even qualities, enhancing the feeling of direct connection to the educational journey and facilitating deeper immersion in the learning environment.

Heroes

Heroes encompass all the characters encountered by the learner during the game. They can be either allies or adversaries, each with their own mission. Heroes and anti-heroes simulate real-world problem environments, serving as role models to follow or examples to avoid.

Game Mechanics For Engagement and Immersion

Storytelling

Successful storytelling is akin to having a skilled teacher who knows how to captivate learners throughout their training. A cohesive plotline that aligns with the educational goal and is woven into the learning content creates a supportive environment for acquiring new knowledge.

Missions

Missions within the game help to provide focus and purpose for undertaking specific training objectives. Participants can clearly see and understand their goals, track their progress, and determine whether their actions are bringing them closer to achieving those missions.

Hints

Playing without hints can be challenging and frustrating. Internal navigation may not always suffice, so having external hints, instructions, and reminders readily available ensures that learners do not become stuck in the game. Hints serve as valuable support, enhancing the overall gaming experience.

Challenges and obstacles

Challenges and obstacles assist participants in comprehending the potential variations of situations and their consequences. Engaging with these challenges helps develop analytical skills, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities, enabling learners to find optimal and efficient solutions.

Puzzles

Puzzles introduce brain workouts that demand learners to analyze, strategize, and solve problems. They foster cognitive skills and promote creative thinking, as participants interact with intricate scenarios to uncover solutions. Puzzles inject an element of variety into the learning environment, requiring learners to quickly analyze and test hypotheses, solve logical problems, and deepen student engagement.

Instant Feedback

Instant feedback provides learners with the assurance that they are not alone in the learning process. Meaningful and timely feedback serves to motivate learners or draws attention to details and areas that have to be improved, directing their focus towards specific aspects that require further work.

The list of mechanics can be expanded to include additional options such as Secrets, Superpowers, Branching scenarios, and more.

At Technomatix, we are dedicated to utilizing game-like elements in an organic manner within an educational framework. Benefits of Gamification in Learning

If gamification in learning is applied without oversaturating with excessive entertaining elements, it creates a favorable environment for learning. Our specialists know how to find a balance and create a harmonious course that ensures efficiency and the development of necessary competencies during training.

Charges the Content

Gamification adds lively energy to the learning process, providing a motivational boost instead of a monotonous absorption of content. Game mechanics, such as points, badges, and rewards, serve as driving forces for comprehension and encourage learners to actively engage. Participants are fully immersed in the learning process, seamlessly integrating themselves within it.

Visible progress, supported by feedback, adds dynamism to the learning journey. Leaderboards enhance the competitive effect and draw attention to achievements. Rather than passively completing the course, participants actively collaborate with all the elements, driven by the main goal: learning.

Spreads Positive Learning Vibes

To truly benefit and motivate students, the goals of the game must be transparent and clear. The atmosphere should allow for a bit of immersion in carefreeness and painless learning, eliminating the fear of formality often associated with traditional schooling or classroom learning. It's a great opportunity for adult learners to escape routine work processes and comfortably acquire new knowledge.

Improves Knowledge Retention

Game logic involves rewarding participants. When individuals are encouraged or rewarded, they receive a satisfying dose of the pleasure hormone dopamine. Dopamine plays a role in memory processes and learning.

As participants experience satisfaction from not only rewards but also other game design elements like solving puzzles, receiving help from characters, and even identifying with game avatars, their knowledge retention improves. Meaningful feedback also plays an important role in guiding participants towards correct answers.
